Austria’s Styria (Steiermark) region is home to many ski resorts, from large destinations popular with international tourists to small, local ski areas loved by residents. Gaberl Ski Resort is a great example of the latter.
If you are interested in skiing in Europe but feel nervous about starting at a famous large resort, or if you are using European ski lifts for the first time, Gaberl is a place worth knowing about.

Gaberl Ski Resort Overview | A Small, Local Ski Area
Gaberl Ski Resort is located about 60 km west of Graz, the capital of Styria, and is easily accessible by car. It is a very compact ski area with approximately two T-bar lifts.
On the intermediate slopes, you can ski from the top of the mountain back down to the base in just 5–10 minutes.
Because of its small scale, Gaberl rarely gets crowded with tourists like the famous ski resorts around Salzburg. Most of the people using the slopes appeared to be local skiers. There was almost no waiting time for the lifts, making it a relaxing place to ski.
The affordable prices are another major advantage. Lift tickets are among the cheapest you can find in Austria. Even more interestingly, Gaberl offers not only full-day tickets but also time-based tickets that can be purchased by the hour, which is a feature you do not often find at larger ski resorts.
How to Get There | Public Transport Is Possible, but Driving Is Much Easier
By Public Transportation
It is possible to reach Gaberl Ski Resort by public transportation as well as by car.
From Graz Central Station, take the S-Bahn to Köflach and then transfer to bus 726. The entire journey takes around 2.5 hours.
However, bus services are quite limited, so checking the timetable in advance is essential.
By Car
For a ski resort, traveling by car is by far the easiest option.
It takes a little over one hour from central Graz, and the route is relatively straightforward. You reach the resort before getting into particularly difficult mountain roads, so unless the weather is severe, driving in winter is relatively manageable. Winter tires are essential.
There is also plenty of parking, so finding a space is generally not a concern.
Ski Rental | Basic Equipment at Reasonable Prices
At Gaberl, you can rent skis, boots, and poles. The prices are shown in the photo.
There are three different price levels depending on the equipment size, and rentals are available for half a day or a full day. If you use the equipment across both the morning and afternoon, it is counted as a full-day rental.
As a reference:
- Adults: €28 per day / €20 for half a day
- Children: €15 per day
Note that ski clothing and gloves are not available for rent, so make sure to bring your own.
The rental shop is located inside the “Sport-Gasthaus” behind the guesthouse visible from the parking area (green No. 3 in the photo below). Although the building is also a guesthouse, there is a rental shop on the left after entering.
There is not always a dedicated staff member at the rental counter, but the staff also work at the restaurant and other facilities, so you can simply ask a nearby staff member and they will help you.
When returning the equipment, I was even told that it was fine to leave it in front of the door. It was a very relaxed and friendly local experience.
Lift Tickets | The Biggest Advantage Is the Hourly Ticket
One of Gaberl’s biggest advantages is its lift tickets that can be purchased by the hour.
There is a parking area and ticket office near the top of the mountain. After buying your ticket, you first ski down and then use the lift from the lower section. This means there can be a time gap between purchasing the ticket and actually using the lift.
- Continuous 4-hour ticket: €31 for adults / €20 for children
→ The time starts counting immediately after purchase. - 1-hour, 2-hour, and other time-based tickets
→ The clock starts when you first use the lift.
The time-based tickets can be used in separate blocks, allowing for a very flexible skiing schedule, such as:
“Ski for one hour → have lunch → ski for another hour in the afternoon.”
However, the price difference between the 2-hour ticket and the continuous 4-hour ticket is not particularly large, while a regular non-consecutive 4-hour ticket costs €46.
If you have never used a T-bar lift before, I strongly recommend starting with a 1-hour ticket. Honestly, there is a chance that you may spend the first hour simply trying to figure out how to use the lift!
Ski Slopes | Mainly for Intermediate Skiers, with Some Options for Beginners
The slopes are mainly aimed at intermediate and advanced skiers (red indicates intermediate, black advanced, and light blue beginner slopes in the map).
Beginners can take the “Autobahn” forest routes (Forest Routes 1 and 2) alongside the main slopes, descending in a large zigzag pattern. While the intermediate slope can be completed in around five minutes, the beginner routes can take around 20 minutes.
There are some junctions along the way that are not shown on the map, but make sure to take the left-hand route.
For complete beginners, there is also a rope tow and a very gentle practice area behind the Sport-Gasthaus (green No. 3 in the photo), shown as No. 8 on the map.
Conclusion | A Great First Step for Skiing in Europe
Gaberl Ski Resort is certainly small compared with popular resorts such as Salzstiegel. However, when you consider its:
- Easy access from Graz
- Very affordable prices
- Convenient 1-hour lift ticket option
- Friendly and flexible staff
I found it to be an excellent choice for your first overseas skiing experience or for getting used to European ski lifts.
If you are planning to visit a large ski resort later, Gaberl can be a great place to warm up and gain confidence before taking on a bigger mountain.
