Introduction
Following my previous hike at Rettenbachklamm, this time I would like to introduce another hiking trail in Graz:
Jakobsleiter.
While Rettenbachklamm felt more like a “streamside hike,” Jakobsleiter is more of a “stairs and forest” hiking route.
It is very easy to access from the city center and allows you to enjoy nature even if you only have a short amount of time, making it a good option when you simply want to “go for a little walk.”

How to Get to Jakobsleiter
A Hiking Trail on the Northern Side of Schlossberg
Jakobsleiter is located on the northern side of Schlossberg, one of the most famous landmarks in central Graz.
It is very easy to reach.
Tram lines 3 or 5
take about 10 minutes from Hauptplatz.
About a 10-Minute Walk from the Nearest Stop
The nearest stop is
Robert-Stolz-Gasse.
From there, it takes about 10 minutes on foot to reach the entrance.
It is surprisingly close to central Graz, making it an easy hiking trail to visit whenever you feel like getting some exercise.

About the Trail
Is the Name Related to “Stairs”?
The word “Leiter” in Jakobsleiter apparently means “ladder.”
As the name suggests, the biggest feature of this trail is the large number of stairs leading up from the entrance.

Nearly 350 Steps Right at the Beginning
There are nearly 350 steps right at the entrance of the trail.
Since the climb starts immediately, it is more of a workout than you might expect.
If you come expecting just a casual stroll, you may find it more challenging than expected.

A Great View Around the 100th Step
About 100 steps up, there is a bench where you can take a break.
The view from here is quite nice, with a view over the city of Graz.
Personally, I already felt quite satisfied at this point.
It is also nice that there is a convenient place to rest just when you start getting tired from climbing the stairs.

A Dense Forest Area at the Top
Once you finish climbing the stairs, the scenery suddenly changes into a forest area.
There are so many trees that it is hard to believe you are still so close to the city center.

There Is Also an Open Area with Benches and Tables
Inside the forest, there is an open area with:
- Benches
- Tables
You could have a light lunch here or simply take a break.

However, the Views Are Not That Impressive
On the other hand, the forest area has a lot of trees, so there are not many viewpoints.
If you are expecting a huge panorama like the one around Furstenstand, you may be a little disappointed.
Instead, I think this is more of a place for:
- Walking through the forest
- A quiet stroll
- Enjoying the fresh air and nature
rather than a destination for spectacular views.

Apple Maps Shows More Detailed Trails Than Google Maps
Just like with my previous hike at Furstenstand, I had the impression that
Apple Maps shows more detailed hiking trails than Google Maps
in this area as well.
So this time, I decided to follow a trail that was only shown on Apple Maps. However…
The Trail Eventually Turned Into a Complete Bush Path
After a while, the trail turned into what was basically a bush path.
It got to the point where I was wondering, “Am I really on the right path?”
I Turned Back Because I Was Worried About Ticks
As the grass became quite tall, I started thinking,
“This could be a dangerous place for ticks.”
So I decided to turn back.
Austria is rich in nature, but you really do need to be careful about ticks (Zecke).
You should especially be cautious in forests and areas with tall grass.
Some Side Trails May Not Be Well Maintained
Overall, the main route was fine, but some of the side trails did not seem to be particularly well maintained.
It seemed like local people knew various paths around the area, but if you are visiting for sightseeing or a light hike, I think it is safer to stick mainly to:
- The staircase area
- The open area at the top
rather than exploring too far off the main route.
The Biggest Advantage Is How Easy It Is to Reach
The biggest advantage of Jakobsleiter is definitely its accessibility.
- You can get there by tram
- It is close to the city center
- You can enjoy it even if you only have a short amount of time
These are all major advantages.
What to Wear
Sneakers Are Recommended
You do not need full hiking gear if you stick to the main route, but there are a lot of stairs, so comfortable sneakers are essential.
Be Prepared for Insects in Summer
The forest area is quite natural and dense, so it is a good idea to bring:
- Insect repellent
- Long pants
These can make your hike more comfortable.
Especially if you plan to enter the bushier side trails, I strongly recommend taking precautions against ticks.

Conclusion
Jakobsleiter is a forest hiking trail that is very easy to access from central Graz.
Its main features are:
- Nearly 350 steps
- A forest area
- A quiet atmosphere
- Close to the city center
That is the overall character of the trail.
Unlike Rettenbachklamm, with its streams and ravine scenery, or Furstenstand, with its spectacular views, Jakobsleiter feels more like a “casual forest walk combined with a light workout.”
However, some of the side trails are not particularly well maintained, so I recommend staying on the main route rather than forcing your way onto unclear paths.
