Ticket Types and Prices
Tickets can easily be purchased from ticket machines at tram and bus stops. The main ticket options include:
Main Ticket Types
- Single tickets (time-based, such as 30 or 60 minutes)
- 24-hour tickets
- Zone-based travel passes (monthly and annual passes)
- Zurich Card (for tourists)
※ If you are traveling outside the city, for example toward Winterthur, you need to purchase a ticket that covers the zones of your destination.
Approximate Fares for Zone 110 (Central Zurich)
※ Approximate prices as of 2024–2025
- 30-minute ticket
→ Approx. CHF 2.80 for adults - 60-minute ticket
→ Approx. CHF 4.40 - 24-hour ticket
→ Approx. CHF 8.80
👉 Tip:
A 24-hour ticket can pay for itself after just two or three rides, making it a very convenient option for sightseeing.
How to Buy a Ticket from a Ticket Machine
You can also use the ZVV app, but creating an account is required.
For short-term visitors, I recommend using the ticket machines instead.
How to Purchase a Ticket
- Select a ticket such as a 30-minute ticket on the touchscreen.
- A list of destinations will appear. Check that your destination is covered by the ticket.
- Select the type of ticket you want on the next screen.
👉 If you are buying tickets for multiple people:
Select “Mehrere Tickets”.
👉 For children:
Select “Reduziert 1/2” for the half-price fare.
- Pay by card or another available payment method and complete your purchase.
⚠ Important Note
The validity period of a 30-minute ticket starts as soon as you purchase it.
For example:
- Wait 10 minutes for the next tram → You effectively have only 20 minutes of validity remaining.
So, it is worth paying attention to when you purchase your ticket.
What Are Zurich Trams Like Inside?
Zurich’s trams are relatively modern, clean, and comfortable.
My personal impression was that they are… much more gentle and smooth than the trams in Graz（笑）.
(Although you could also say that Graz’s tram drivers are just a little too enthusiastic…)
Do You Need to Validate Your Ticket?
I couldn’t find any ticket validation machines inside the tram.
If you are used to public transportation systems in countries such as Germany, this might seem a little strange. However, in Zurich, the ticket’s validity period is printed on the ticket when you purchase it, so there is no need to validate it separately.
Understanding Zurich’s Zone System
Zurich’s public transportation system uses a zone-based fare system.
- Central Zurich → Zone 110
- Suburban areas → Multiple zones may be required
Therefore, if you are traveling outside the city center, you need a ticket that covers all the relevant zones.
For sightseeing within central Zurich, Zone 110 is generally sufficient.
