One of the winter attractions that adds a special touch to Graz is the ice sculpture exhibition at the Grazer Landhaus.
These ice sculptures are unveiled at the same time as the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, creating a magical winter atmosphere in the heart of Graz’s Old Town.
This time, I decided to visit the exhibition at two different times of day—during the day and at night. Even though the ice sculptures were the same, their appearance changed considerably depending on the time of day and the temperature, making it a surprisingly interesting experience.
Ice Sculptures Unveiled Alongside the Christmas Tree Lighting
The ice sculptures installed in the courtyard of the Grazer Landhaus are opened to the public at the same time as the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
Surrounded by historic architecture, the transparent ice sculptures create an elegant winter scene that feels very characteristic of Graz.
The exhibition attracts particularly large crowds immediately after opening, with many people stopping to take photos or simply admire the sculptures up close.
Visiting During the Day: The Sculptures Were Still Beautiful
I visited during the daytime approximately one week after the lighting ceremony.
I expected the sculptures to have already melted somewhat, but in reality, they were still in remarkably good condition.
During the day, natural light makes it much easier to appreciate the transparency of the ice and the intricate details of the carvings.
The way the ice sparkles in the sunlight was much more beautiful in person than in photographs. It made me realize just how much character ice can have.
Returning at Night: Melting Sculptures and a Magical Atmosphere
When I returned at night, it was several weeks later.
During those two weeks or so, Graz had experienced relatively mild weather, with daytime temperatures reaching close to 10°C on many days.
As a result, the ice sculptures had clearly melted quite a bit.
Their edges had become rounded, and some of the finer details had begun to collapse, making them look noticeably different from when I had seen them during the day.
However, visiting at night has its own unique appeal.
Illuminations Transform the Courtyard into a Magical World
At night, the ice sculptures are illuminated and combined with the surrounding Christmas lights, instantly creating a much more magical atmosphere.
Even the partially melted sculptures took on a soft and beautiful appearance when illuminated at night.
If you want to see the sculptures in their most pristine condition, visit during the day.
If you want to enjoy the atmosphere, nighttime is the better choice.
In this way, I think one of the biggest charms of the ice sculptures at the Grazer Landhaus is that they can be enjoyed in completely different ways depending on when you visit.
Conclusion: Still Worth Seeing Even After They Start to Melt
Ice sculptures are inevitably affected by temperature, so their condition will vary depending on when you visit.
Even when they have already started to melt, as they had during my nighttime visit, the illuminations make the exhibition enjoyable and atmospheric.
If you are exploring Graz’s Christmas markets or walking around the Old Town, be sure to stop by the Grazer Landhaus.
If possible, I recommend visiting both during the day and at night to experience the sculptures in two completely different ways.
