Review of Foods You Can Buy at Switzerland’s Supermarket “Migros” | Recommended for Self-Catering Travelers

旅行

Introduction

In my previous post, I wrote about my trip to Switzerland. Switzerland is famous for its stunning natural scenery, but it is also well known for its high dining costs.
Because of this, the best strategy is often to stay in an apartment and cook your own meals. In that case, buying ingredients from local supermarkets is the way to go.

Migros is one of the major supermarket chains in Switzerland, alongside Coop. In this article, I will review some of the food items you can buy at Migros.

Opening Days

  • Open on weekdays (same as Graz)
  • Closed on Sundays
  • Also closed on holidays such as Christmas and Easter

M-Budget & M-Classic

Similar to SPAR’s “S-Budget” or BILLA’s “clever,” Migros offers its own private brand called M-Budget, which is very affordable.
Just like in Austria, the quality is good enough for everyday use, so you can shop with confidence.
There is also another private label called M-Classic.

Drinks

First of all, the milk is excellent!
Here, 3.9% fat seems to be standard (compared to around 3.6% in Japan and Austria).
However, it is slightly more expensive than in Austria or Japan.

  • zuribieter Vollmilch (cheapest milk): 1.8 CHF / 1L
  • M-Classic Orangensaft (orange juice): 1.8 CHF / 1L
  • M-Classic CHOCODRINK: 0.8 CHF / 500ml

All of them tasted great. The CHOCODRINK was especially convenient to drink during the drive.

Yogurt

I bought M-Classic yogurt in flavors such as apple, blueberry, strawberry, and pineapple, each priced at 0.65 CHF / 200g.
They were rich and delicious—Swiss dairy products are definitely reliable.

Chocolate Bars

  • M-Budget Chocolat Noir / au lait: 0.8 CHF / 100g
→ Comparable to Austria or cheaper than Japan. Not as premium as Lindt, but still quite good.
  • Frey: 1.95 CHF / 100g
→ Perfect if you want something a bit nicer but find Lindt too expensive.

Chocolate Biscuits

  • M-Budget Choco Petit Beurre: 1.25 CHF / 125g
  • Chocolate Cookies: 1.6 CHF / 225g

Both were tasty. The cookies were thicker than expected.

🍕 Pizza

  • M-Budget Margherita: 2.7 CHF / 430g
  • Don Giovanni: 5.9 CHF / 1kg

Both are refrigerated pizzas, but surprisingly high quality. The Margherita has plenty of cheese with a well-balanced tomato sauce. The Don Giovanni is more filling (after all, it’s 1kg!) with a mix of crispy and chewy textures.

They are affordable and perfect for travelers who prefer cooking over eating out. You can enjoy authentic pizza simply by baking it in the oven.

🥖 Bread

  • M-Classic Milchbrötli (1.9 CHF / 10 pieces)
→ Standard milk bread. Not particularly special, but convenient as a snack.
  • Berliner (Krapfen) (4.2 CHF / 4 pieces)
→ Filled with raspberry jam (Himbeer), unlike Austria where apricot is more common.

Vegetables

Most vegetables are sold by weight. You weigh them at a scale in the produce section, enter the item number, and print a price sticker to attach to your bag. If you skip this step, you’ll be sent back to weigh them at checkout.

Price examples:

  • Onions: 1.4 CHF/kg
  • Carrots: 1.4 CHF/kg
  • Cabbage: 2 CHF/kg
  • Bananas: 1.2 CHF/kg
  • Green onions: 0.7 CHF / 3
  • Oranges: 2.8 CHF / 10
  • Mushrooms: 1.6 CHF / 500g

Others

  • OLMA Bratwurst: 7.2 CHF / 4
  • Vegetable bouillon: 1 CHF / 12 cubes
  • Spaghetti: 1.2 CHF / kg
  • M-Classic Maasdam cheese: 1.85 CHF / 200g
  • M-Classic Cervelas: 1.7 CHF / 2
  • M-Budget ham trio: 2.3 CHF / 200g
  • Black Forest cake: 7.95 CHF (whole)

Summary

  • Consistent quality
  • Private brands are good enough
  • Ideal for travelers who cook

Eating out in Switzerland is expensive and not always satisfying, but by shopping at Migros and cooking for yourself, you can save money and enjoy reliable meals.
Highly recommended for travelers staying in apartments.
