Introduction
In my previous posts, I wrote about traveling in Slovenia, including Lake Bled and Ljubljana and Maribor.
While walking around Slovenia, you will frequently see signs that say “Burek.” At first, I had no idea what it was, but after trying it, I realized it is one of the most popular local fast foods.
In this article, I will introduce two popular Balkan street foods you can easily try in Slovenia: Burek and Lepinja, based on my personal experience.

What is Burek?
Burek is a popular snack across Slovenia and the Balkan region. Simply put, it is a pastry filled with various ingredients.
The texture is similar to layered pie dough—crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, somewhat like a meat pie.
There are several common fillings, such as:
- Meat (Mesni Burek)
- Cheese
- Spinach
This variety makes it easy to find something you’ll enjoy.
What is Lepinja?
Lepinja is a soft, fluffy flatbread commonly found in the Balkans. It has a light texture, similar to a soft muffin or pita bread.
While it can be eaten on its own, it is typically served with fillings.
One of the most popular combinations is with Ćevapčići (grilled minced meat sausages).
Ćevapčići are small, skinless sausages made from spiced minced meat. The combination with Lepinja is excellent—simple but very satisfying thanks to the juicy meat and soft bread.
You can even find Ćevapčići in supermarkets in Austria. I tried cooking them at home before, and they were surprisingly easy and delicious.

Where I Tried Them
This time, I visited a local spot in Ljubljana called “Okrepčevalnica Savska.”
It feels more like a place for locals rather than tourists, with a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

Food Review
Lepinja with Ćevapčići (€8)
I ordered Lepinja filled with Ćevapčići.
The first impression is simple: meat, and lots of it. The juicy, spiced meat pairs perfectly with the soft bread, making it a very satisfying dish despite its simplicity.

However, it is more filling than it looks—one portion is quite heavy.

Mesni Burek (€3.5)
The Mesni Burek I tried was packed with minced meat inside flaky pastry. It was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a rich, meaty flavor.
That said, it is quite heavy, so eating multiple portions might feel overwhelming.

Portion Size Tips (Important)
One thing I noticed is that portions are quite large.
Recommended: share 3 dishes among 4 people
This way, you can try different items without feeling too full.
Ordering one per person might be a bit too much, especially for Japanese appetites.
Overall, Slovenia felt more affordable than Austria, and eating out was closer to Japanese price levels, which made it feel very comfortable.
Conclusion
Burek and Lepinja are both easy-to-try local foods in Slovenia, offering great flavor and satisfying portions.
They are especially recommended for meat lovers and can be considered a kind of “European fast food.”
Just keep in mind that portions are large, so sharing is a good idea.
If you visit Ljubljana, be sure to give them a try—it’s a great way to experience local food culture.
