Introduction
When you ask locals in Graz, “Where is a good restaurant to try?”, one name that is very likely to come up is Landhauskeller.
Rather than being a restaurant aimed primarily at tourists, it is a well-regarded local favorite that people recommend as a place where you simply can’t go wrong. It is also an elegant restaurant often chosen for special occasions and business dinners.
This time, I actually visited Landhauskeller for lunch, so I’d like to share my experience.

What Is Landhauskeller?
Landhauskeller is a restaurant located inside the historic Landhaus building, the seat of the Styrian provincial parliament, in the heart of Graz’s Old Town.
The same building is also home to the Styrian Armoury (Landeszeughaus), one of Graz’s most famous tourist attractions.
The building itself dates back to the 16th century and was constructed in the Renaissance style. Its courtyard is considered one of the most beautiful in Graz. Landhauskeller makes use of this historic setting and has earned a strong reputation for its modern interpretations of traditional Austrian cuisine.
From Herrengasse, the restaurant is located toward the back of the building.
The entrance is actually along Schmiedgasse, so it may be a little difficult to find if you are approaching from Herrengasse.
A Reservation Is Essential!
In Graz, I get the impression that there are quite a few popular restaurants where you can still get a table without a reservation.
However, Landhauskeller is an exception.
In fact, I once visited on a weekday during lunchtime without a reservation, only to be told at the entrance,
“Sorry, we’re fully booked today.”
So this time, I made sure to book in advance and gave it another try.
Even on a weekday at lunchtime, the restaurant was quite full with guests who had reservations, so I definitely recommend booking in advance if you are visiting Graz as a tourist.
My Visit to Landhauskeller
Schmiedgasse, where the entrance is located, is one of Graz’s well-known streets for food and dining.
Popular hotels such as Aiola Living and seafood restaurants such as El Pescador can also be found along the street, making it an enjoyable place to walk around even if you are not stopping for a meal.
After entering Landhauskeller, you first walk through a quiet, elegant hallway decorated with chandeliers.
Further inside is a beautiful courtyard, where you will find the bar area called Katze Katze.
“Ah, so the restaurant must be somewhere beyond here.”
I continued inside until I reached the restaurant and told the staff that I had a reservation…
Oops… I Made the Wrong Reservation!
That’s when an unexpected problem came up.
It turned out that I had actually reserved
Katze Katze, the bar, rather than Landhauskeller.
When I went back and checked the reservation website, I found that the booking pages for
- Landhauskeller
- Katze Katze
were displayed next to each other. It was understandable once you looked carefully, but the layout was still a little confusing.
Well, ultimately, it was completely my fault for not checking carefully enough. (Haha.)
“Does this mean I won’t get to eat here today either…?”
I was thinking that when I explained the situation to the staff at the bar.
They told me,
“We can also serve the lunch menu at Katze Katze.”
How kind of them!
So, in the end, I simply had lunch at the bar.
As it turned out, I was able to enjoy my meal in the relaxed atmosphere of the courtyard, so I was more than happy with how things worked out.
I Ordered the Daily Lunch Special!
In addition to its regular menu, Landhauskeller offers a daily lunch special on weekdays, priced at €13.90 per person.
On the day of my visit, the daily lunch special was
pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon.
It’s a classic combination in Austria.
When the dish arrived, the meat was nice and thick, and it looked perfectly cooked.
After taking the first bite,
the pork tenderloin was incredibly tender, while the saltiness and rich flavor of the bacon complemented it perfectly.
Wrapping the tenderloin in bacon added extra richness and kept the meat from becoming dry at all.
It also went very well with the side dishes. Although the presentation was simple, the dish as a whole was an exceptionally well-balanced lunch.
It’s easy to see why locals recommend this restaurant. My impression was that it offers “classic Austrian cuisine, but at a higher level.”

Conclusion
Landhauskeller truly lives up to its reputation as one of Graz’s top restaurants. From the food and atmosphere to the service, I was very satisfied with the experience.
Although I accidentally made a reservation at the bar instead of the restaurant, the staff handled the situation very flexibly and kindly, allowing me to enjoy my meal without any stress.
Graz has many excellent restaurants, but if you are thinking, “Since I’m here, I’d like to try one of the restaurants that locals actually recommend,” then Landhauskeller is definitely worth considering.
Just make sure you make a reservation! You don’t want to be turned away like I was on my first attempt, or accidentally book the bar instead of the restaurant. Be sure to double-check your reservation details before heading there. (Haha.)
