Introduction
I previously wrote about yogurts you can buy at Austrian supermarkets, and one of my personal favorites is the BERG BAUERN brand.
Austrian supermarkets have an impressive selection of yogurt, but BERG BAUERN stands out for its wide variety of flavors. There are so many options that just looking at them is fun.
This time, I tried several BERG BAUERN flavors and put together my personal impressions of each one.

What Is BERG BAUERN?
As mentioned above, this time I wanted to focus specifically on the BERG BAUERN flavored yogurt series, which is one of my favorites in Austrian supermarkets.
In German, BERG BAUERN means “mountain farmers.”
As the name suggests, the series uses milk from mountain farms in the Alpine region. The yogurt has a rich, creamy, and smooth taste.
It is one of the standard yogurt products found in Austrian supermarkets, and one of its most distinctive features is that it comes in a glass jar.
Another major attraction is the huge variety of flavors.
In addition to classic flavors such as strawberry and vanilla, you can find unusual options such as cinnamon, cappuccino, and caramel cookie—flavors that are not commonly found in Japan.
However, these glass jars are subject to Austria’s PFAND deposit system.
PFAND is common for plastic bottles and cans in Austria, but it was a little surprising to me that yogurt jars are also part of the deposit system.
I didn’t know this at first and simply threw my empty jar into the glass recycling bin…
After finishing the yogurt, make sure to return the jar to the supermarket so you can get your deposit back.
Some supermarkets also offer promotions such as “1+1 free,” so buying them during a sale can be a great deal.
Erdbeere (Strawberry)
Let’s start with the classic strawberry flavor.

This one was simply delicious.
The sweetness and yogurt’s natural tang are nicely balanced, making it feel almost like a dessert.
It is a very well-made fruit yogurt, and if you are trying BERG BAUERN for the first time, this is probably the flavor I would recommend starting with.
Vanille (Vanilla)
This is one of my personal favorites.
The vanilla aroma is quite noticeable, and the yogurt has a rich, creamy taste.

It is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and it is perfect when you want something a little sweet.
It may feel less like yogurt and more like a light dessert.
This is one of the flavors I find myself buying again and again.
Heidelbeere (Blueberry)
Another classic flavor.
It is exactly as delicious as you would expect.

Like the strawberry flavor, it has a well-balanced combination of sweetness and acidity, making it an easy-to-enjoy fruit yogurt.
There are no big surprises, but that is also what makes it a safe choice.
If you don’t want to risk choosing a flavor you might not like, this is a good option.
Stracciatella (Chocolate Chips)
This is a combination that you don’t see very often in Japan.
Chocolate chips are mixed into the yogurt.

The concept is interesting, but honestly, this one wasn’t really for me.
The chocolate chips are quite bitter, while the yogurt itself is relatively low in sweetness.
It may be a healthier-feeling option, but if you are expecting something dessert-like, it can feel a little underwhelming.
If you prefer less-sweet yogurt, you might enjoy it. Personally, though, I don’t think I would buy it again.
In fact, when I went back to the supermarket later, this was the only flavor that seemed to be left in large quantities. I couldn’t help wondering, “Maybe Austrians don’t like this one that much either?” (Haha.)
Karamell-Keks (Caramel Cookie)
This is one of the more unusual flavors in the series.

In addition to caramel-flavored yogurt, it contains soft pieces that are somewhat like cookies or sponge cake.

But the most noticeable thing about this flavor is the sweetness.
It is very sweet.
Of all the BERG BAUERN flavors I tried, this was definitely one of the sweetest.
If you have a serious sweet tooth, you might love it. If you don’t usually enjoy very sweet foods, however, you may want to keep that in mind.
As for the little pieces inside, honestly, I wondered whether they were really necessary.
I assume they are intended to add some texture, but personally, I didn’t think they worked particularly well with the yogurt.
I liked it more than the Stracciatella, but I probably wouldn’t buy this one again either.
Cappuccino
And finally, we have a surprisingly unusual flavor: cappuccino.

I often saw Austrian people eating this flavor, apparently on a daily basis, so I decided to give it a try while wondering, “What is coffee-flavored yogurt actually like…?”
It has a distinct coffee aroma that really does remind you of cappuccino. But as for whether that coffee flavor works well with the tanginess of yogurt…
Well, let’s just say I wasn’t completely convinced.
Austrians are known for their love of coffee—you often hear the saying “No coffee, no work”—so perhaps that is part of the reason this flavor is so popular.
If you love coffee, though, I think it is definitely worth trying at least once.

Conclusion
BERG BAUERN is one of my top recommendations when it comes to flavored yogurt that you can easily find in Austrian supermarkets.
There are so many flavors to choose from, which makes trying a different one each time part of the fun. The glass jar also gives the yogurt a slightly more special feel.
My personal ranking is:
1st: Vanille (Vanilla)
2nd: Erdbeere (Strawberry)
3rd: Heidelbeere (Blueberry)
4th: Cappuccino
5th: Karamell-Keks (Caramel Cookie)
6th: Stracciatella (Chocolate Chips)
That’s how I would rank them based on my personal taste.
Vanilla is especially easy to recommend. Even after eating it several times, I don’t get tired of it. It is the kind of flavor where you can think, “When in doubt, just buy this one.”
If you spot BERG BAUERN in an Austrian supermarket, give it a try and see which flavor becomes your favorite. Just don’t forget about the PFAND deposit on the glass jar!
