Introduction
When it comes to classic potato chips in Austria, Kelly’s is one of the most popular brands. I recently tried several flavors and wanted to share my honest review.
Compared to Japan, they are slightly more expensive, but if you take advantage of supermarket deals like “1+1” or “1+2,” you can sometimes get them for around €2 per 150g bag.
Overall, the quality is high and the taste is excellent. Compared to Japanese chips, they are slightly thicker and have a crunchier texture, which makes them more satisfying.

What Is Kelly’s?
Kelly’s is an Austrian snack company officially known as “Kelly Ges.m.b.H.”, headquartered in Vienna.
Founded in 1955, the company originally started with popcorn. Today, it produces a wide range of snacks including potato chips and nuts, and is widely recognized across Austria.
In terms of positioning, it’s similar to Calbee in Japan—a familiar brand you’ll often see in supermarket snack aisles.
Kelly’s is now part of a German snack group and operates across Europe.

Flavor Review
Salz (Lightly Salted)
This is the classic salted flavor.
It’s very similar to Japanese “lightly salted” chips—simple, clean, and easy to enjoy.
You can really taste the potato itself, making it a reliable and classic choice. Personally, this felt like the safest option.

Here’s also a cheaper private-label option from HOFER (around €1.49 for 250g).
Interestingly, unlike many budget chips in Japan, these are actually quite good. They’re thin, crispy, and flavorful—surprisingly high quality for the price.
At this level, they might even offer better value than similar products in Japan.

Grillerei Style (BBQ Flavor)
This flavor is a barbecue-style chip with a smoky and slightly sweet taste.
It’s similar to Japanese BBQ chips but feels a bit more balanced and less sweet.
With hints of tomato, spices, and garlic, it has a rich flavor without being overwhelming.

Sweet Paprika
Paprika flavor is a classic in Europe.
At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it turned out to be mildly sweet with a hint of spice.
It’s not spicy—instead, it’s more like a mix of sweetness, umami, and light smokiness. If you’re familiar with Japanese snacks, it’s somewhat similar to Karamucho.
To be honest, I didn’t strongly notice “paprika” itself, but the flavor is quite addictive. This ended up being my personal favorite.

Here’s a paprika chip from Lorenz. Even though it’s the same flavor category, the taste is quite different—less like Karamucho and more paprika-forward.

This is another budget option from the “clever” brand (also €1.49 for 250g).
Flavor-wise, it’s actually closer to Kelly’s than Lorenz—and just as good.
At this point, private-label chips feel more than enough for everyday snacking.

Overall Impression
Kelly’s potato chips are known for their crunchy texture and rich potato flavor.
They are slightly thicker than Japanese chips, which adds to their satisfying bite.
While the price is a bit higher, using promotions makes them quite reasonable—and the quality definitely justifies it.
If you visit Austria, this is a snack you should definitely try at least once. A true local classic.
