Introduction
Austrians really love ice cream. While some shops are closed during the winter, from spring through autumn, it is common to see long lines outside gelato shops on weekends and holidays.
This year in particular, Europe has been hit by intense heatwaves, with temperatures in Graz reaching nearly 37°C. In weather like this, ice cream is almost less of a dessert and more of a way to survive the heat!
This time, I’d like to introduce Charly Temmel Gelato, one of the most popular gelato shops in Graz.

What Is Charly Temmel Gelato?
Charly Temmel Gelato is a gelato chain that was founded in 1986 in Styria, Austria. Today, it has locations throughout Austria and is particularly well known in the state of Styria.
The shop specializes in authentic Italian-style gelato made with carefully selected ingredients. In addition to classic flavors, there is also a wide variety of seasonal and distinctly Austrian flavors.
In Graz, you can find locations such as:
- Herrengasse location in the Old Town
- The kiosk-style location at Jakominiplatz
Both are popular with locals and tourists alike.
Especially on summer weekends, it is not unusual to see a line of customers stretching out in front of the shop.
The Herrengasse Location
I visited the Herrengasse location in the heart of Graz’s Old Town.
A single scoop costs €2.70.
That may seem a little expensive compared with Japan, but once I received it, I was surprised by how large the serving was. My first thought was, “For €2.70, this is actually a pretty good deal!”

There was a surprisingly large selection of flavors.
Elderflower (Holunder) is particularly interesting. It is a popular plant in Austria and is commonly used to make syrup. It has a refreshing, sweet aroma and is not a flavor you come across very often in Japan. If you’re visiting Austria, it’s definitely worth trying!
Trying the Gelato
This time, I ordered the classic vanilla and chocolate flavors.
Both flavors were incredibly smooth, with the light and refreshing mouthfeel you would expect from good gelato.
What impressed me most was the size of the serving.
When you order a single scoop in Japan, you might expect a relatively small portion. Here, however, they give you a generous serving, making it surprisingly satisfying even on a hot summer day.
Of course, on an extremely hot day, it melts incredibly quickly, so you have to eat it fast!（笑）
In terms of intensity, the Cremissimo Schokolade supermarket ice cream I reviewed previously has a richer chocolate flavor. However, this gelato has a lighter finish, which makes it refreshing and enjoyable all the way to the last bite, even on a hot day.
If you prefer a light and refreshing summer ice cream rather than something rich and heavy, you may actually prefer this gelato.

Charly Temmel Gelato made it easy to understand why the shop is so popular in Graz.
The prices are quite reasonable, especially considering that it is located in a popular tourist area, and the generous serving size is definitely another highlight.
In addition to classic flavors like chocolate and vanilla, you can also try distinctly Austrian flavors such as elderflower and apricot, which are not always easy to find in Japan.
If you’re visiting Graz in summer, it is the perfect place to stop for a refreshing break while exploring the Old Town. Especially on a hot day, a cold scoop of gelato makes for the perfect treat!
