Best Boxed Ice Creams to Try in Austrian Supermarkets

Introduction

One thing I often notice while living in Austria is just how much Austrians love ice cream. As the weather gets warmer, you’ll frequently see people walking around the city enjoying ice cream. In historic districts, it’s not uncommon to find long lines in front of ice cream shops.

That said, ice cream from shops can be quite expensive. Of course, it’s delicious, but eating it regularly isn’t exactly budget-friendly. As for me, I usually glance at those lines from afar and quietly pick up a box of ice cream from the supermarket instead.

Supermarkets in Austria offer a wide variety of boxed ice cream at relatively affordable prices. In this article, I’ll introduce some of the ones I’ve actually tried.

S-Budget Vanilla Ice Cream (€2/kg)

First up is the budget-friendly S-Budget vanilla ice cream. S-Budget is the discount brand of the Austrian supermarket SPAR, offering a wide range of products from food to daily necessities.

The biggest appeal of this vanilla ice cream is its price. In terms of taste, it may lack the richness of higher-end options, but it’s still perfectly enjoyable for everyday consumption. “Good enough” is probably the best way to describe it.

If you’re looking for something cheap and easy to enjoy regularly, this is a great choice.

Mucci Selection (Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry) (€2/kg)

Next is a three-flavor ice cream: vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate. This product is from Mucci and can be purchased at ALDI (known as Hofer in Austria).

The appeal of this type is the ability to enjoy multiple flavors. In this case, the vanilla and chocolate are solid and tasty, while the strawberry felt a bit underwhelming. It doesn’t contain real fruit pieces, so the fruitiness is somewhat mild.

Still, being able to switch flavors depending on your mood makes it a fun option.

Cremissimo Series

Next is a slightly higher-tier option: the classic vanilla ice cream from Cremissimo.

It’s a bit more expensive than S-Budget, but noticeably richer and creamier. It has a smooth texture and feels like a “premium supermarket vanilla ice cream.”

Even if you usually go for cheaper options, this is a great choice when you feel like treating yourself a little. Among boxed ice creams, it’s consistently reliable in terms of quality.

There’s also a three-flavor version from Cremissimo, featuring hazelnut, vanilla, and chocolate.

The hazelnut flavor can feel a bit sweet on its own, but I personally recommend combining it with the other flavors. For example, chocolate and hazelnut together create a classic and delicious pairing.

You can also mix all three flavors with vanilla for a more interesting experience—one of the fun aspects of this type of ice cream.

Finally, there’s a premium chocolate version from Cremissimo (around €5.8). Unlike standard boxed ice cream, it features chocolate cream and shaved chocolate on top, with a slightly alcoholic note, giving it a more luxurious taste. If you’re a chocolate lover, it’s perfect as a little treat.

There’s also a Schwarzwälder Kirsch flavor in the same series, combining chocolate and vanilla ice cream with chocolate chips and berry sauce.

【Update: April 5, 2026】Ben & Jerry’s Series

Taking it one step further, here’s the Ben & Jerry’s series. I often saw locals buying this, so I decided to give it a try despite the higher price. Although it’s now owned by Unilever, the brand originally comes from the United States.

At first glance, it looks like a uniform flavor, but inside there are brownie-like chunks, creating a mixed flavor experience.

It’s definitely delicious! However, one downside is that it’s quite hard, making it difficult to scoop. When I transferred it to a plate, it ended up looking quite different from the packaging… unfortunately.

It’s really hard… especially the brownie parts…

Conclusion | Supermarket Ice Cream Is Surprisingly Good

While ice cream shops in Austria are popular, supermarket boxed ice cream offers a wide variety and is surprisingly enjoyable.

Each of the options introduced here has its own strengths:

  • Best value for money: S-Budget
  • Variety and fun: Mucci three-flavor
  • A more premium experience: Cremissimo

Walking around with ice cream from a shop is fun, but enjoying a box of ice cream at home can be just as satisfying. If you get the chance to visit an Austrian supermarket, be sure to check out the ice cream section.
