What is ÖBB? A Must-Have Transport Option for Traveling in Austria

ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) is the national railway company that covers all of Austria.
Similar to Japan’s JR, it connects not only cities within Austria but also neighboring countries such as Germany, Switzerland, and Hungary.

It is well known for its comfortable seating and reliable operations, making it an essential mode of transportation for both travelers and residents.

How to Buy Tickets

▶ Booking via Official Website or App

You can purchase ÖBB tickets through the following:

Simply enter your departure and arrival stations, select your preferred train, and book. The interface is intuitive and easy to use, even for first-time users.

▶ Early Bird Discounts (Sparschiene) & Flex / Non-Flex Tickets

If you purchase tickets early (roughly 2–3 weeks in advance), you may be able to get Sparschiene tickets, which can offer discounts of up to around 70%.

If your schedule is fixed, this is highly recommended.

There are also different ticket types: Non-Flex tickets (fixed train and time, no changes allowed) and Flex tickets (valid for any train on the selected route).

Flex tickets allow you to travel anytime within 2 days from the selected travel date. You can also stop over along the way or change your travel plan on the day.

Sparschiene tickets are Non-Flex, so be aware of this restriction.

▶ If You Have a KlimaTicket

If you live in Austria, you may already have a KlimaTicket.

For example, if you have a Klimaticket Steiermark, travel within Styria is free. So if you travel from Graz to Vienna, you only need to pay for the section outside Styria.

If you register your KlimaTicket in your ÖBB account, discounts will be applied automatically when purchasing tickets. Creating an account is highly recommended.

Seat Selection & Reservation Tips

ÖBB trains offer First Class and Second Class seating.
Additionally, there are special car types depending on your needs.

Main types include:

TypeDescription
Quiet ZoneFor those who prefer silence. Calls and loud conversations are not allowed.
Family ZoneFor families with children. Includes entertainment and is lively.
StandardRegular seating area used by most passengers.

Some cars also allow bicycles, often combined with family compartments.

▶ First Class vs Second Class

The main differences are seat space and layout.

  • Seat space:
First class is more spacious and comfortable, though not as luxurious as airplane first class.
  • Layout:
    Second class: 2+2 seating
First class: 2+1 seating with more space

First class tends to be quieter with more business travelers, while second class is used by a wider range of passengers.

▶ Seat Reservations

Seat reservations cost about €3 per person. While not always necessary for short trips, it’s recommended for long-distance travel or busy periods.

Sometimes, due to system issues, seats may be marked “ggf. reserviert” (possibly reserved). In that case, just sit down and move if someone comes—it’s usually handled casually.

Summary

  • Book tickets via the app or official website
  • Register discounts like KlimaTicket in advance
  • Be mindful of Quiet / Family zones
  • Don’t forget to issue your ticket
  • Watch out for payment issues and train changes

Once you get used to it, ÖBB is extremely convenient for both travelers and residents. Enjoy your train journey in Austria!
