Introduction
When it comes to popular potato chips in Austria, Kelly’s, which I introduced in a previous article, is one of the best-known brands. However, Austrian supermarkets also offer a wide variety of other options, including Lay’s, Lorenz, and supermarket private-label brands.
This time, rather than comparing the brands individually, I tried different potato chips by flavor, such as classic salted and paprika, and put together my impressions.
In general, Austrian potato chips tend to be slightly thicker and crunchier than Japanese potato chips. Prices can be a little higher, but supermarket sales can make them surprisingly affordable.

Salted Potato Chips (Salz / Gesalzen)
Let’s start with the classic salted flavor. In Austria, you will often see potato chips labeled “Salz” or “Gesalzen.”
Kelly’s Salz
This is a simple classic salted flavor that reminded me quite a lot of Japanese lightly salted potato chips. You can really taste the potatoes, and there are no strong or unusual flavors, making it an easy choice for almost anyone.
Lay’s Gesalzen
Another classic salted potato chip. Like Kelly’s, it has a mild saltiness similar to Japanese lightly salted chips and is an easy-to-eat flavor that should appeal to a wide range of people.
HOFER Private Label Salz
This is an inexpensive private-label potato chip sold at HOFER (€1.49/250g).
Private-label potato chips in Japan can sometimes feel a little disappointing in terms of flavor or texture, but I thought these were actually quite good. The value for money was excellent.
S-budget Salz
This is SPAR’s private-label salted potato chip.
I found the saltiness quite strong, so I think this one may be more of an acquired taste. If you are looking for a classic salted chip, I would personally recommend Kelly’s or the HOFER private label instead.

Paprika Potato Chips
One of the most common potato chip flavors you will find in European supermarkets is paprika.
It is not a flavor you see very often in Japan, but after trying several versions, I found that the differences between brands were surprisingly noticeable. It turned out to be a much more interesting category than I expected.
Kelly’s Sweet Paprika
This has a slightly sweet and spicy flavor, although it is hardly hot at all.
Personally, it reminded me of a sweeter version of Japanese Koikeya Karamucho. It was extremely addictive, and this was my favorite flavor among all the chips I tried this time.
Kelly’s × KOTANYI Paprika
This is a collaboration product with KOTANYI, an Austrian spice company. I was curious about how it differs from the regular Sweet Paprika version, so I would like to compare the two in more detail in the future.
Lay’s Red Paprika
This is Lay’s version of paprika-flavored potato chips. The difference from Kelly’s was quite noticeable, showing how much personality different brands can have even when they use the same basic paprika flavor.
Lorenz Paprika
Even though this is also a paprika flavor, it tastes quite different from Kelly’s.
It has less of the Karamucho-like character of Kelly’s and a stronger paprika aroma and flavor, which makes it taste more like what you would expect from a classic paprika chip.
clever Paprika
At just €1.49 for 250g, this is a very inexpensive option, but the taste was much better than I expected.
Its flavor profile is closer to Kelly’s than Lorenz, and the quality is surprisingly good for a private-label product. It may not quite match the branded products in terms of flavor and texture, but the value for money is excellent.

4th: Lay’s Red Paprika
Sour Cream & Onion
Lay’s Sour Cream & Onion
This classic flavor combines the tanginess of sour cream with the savory taste of onion. I had not tried sour cream-flavored potato chips very often before, but I really enjoyed these!
Kelly’s Sour Cream
This is Kelly’s sour cream flavor. Unlike the Lay’s version, it does not contain onion, so it is a good choice if you want to enjoy a pure sour cream flavor.

Other Austrian Potato Chip Flavors
Kelly’s Salt and Vinegar
Vinegar-flavored potato chips are relatively unusual in Japan. These have a strong vinegar flavor, so they may be a little polarizing. Personally, I think I prefer the regular salted version without the vinegar.
Kelly’s Grillerei Style
These are smoky, slightly sweet potato chips with a BBQ-style flavor.
They contain tomato, spices, garlic, and other seasonings. Despite having plenty of flavor, they do not feel too heavy. Compared with Japanese BBQ-flavored chips, I found the taste a little more subtle and restrained.
Conclusion
Austrian potato chips can taste surprisingly different from one brand to another, even when they share the same flavor.
The differences are particularly noticeable with paprika-flavored potato chips. Since paprika is a flavor that is not commonly found in Japan, I definitely recommend giving it a try if you are visiting Austria.
My personal favorites are Kelly’s Sweet Paprika and Kelly’s Salz. If you are not sure which Austrian potato chips to try first, I recommend starting with these two.
