Graz Around the Summer Solstice
The summer solstice is the longest day of the year, and in Graz, Austria, the days around the solstice are surprisingly long.
Graz is located at approximately 47 degrees north latitude, roughly the same latitude as northern Hokkaido in Japan, around Wakkanai. Because of its northern latitude, the days are particularly long around the summer solstice. The sun rises at around 5 AM and sets at around 9 PM, giving the city approximately 16 hours of daylight.
In Japan, 8 PM would usually feel like nighttime, but in Graz, it can still look like late afternoon. In this article, I will show you what Graz looks like at around 8 PM during the summer solstice.

From Hauptplatz to Kunsthaus Graz
Hauptplatz, the central square of Graz’s historic Old Town, is still bustling with people even at 8 PM.
Because the days are so long in summer, people can take their time after work or sightseeing. The outdoor seating areas of cafés and restaurants around the square are often packed with people. Some are chatting over coffee, while others are enjoying dinner and drinks on the terraces.
This year has been particularly hot, so the cooler hours of the evening can actually be more comfortable for going out than the middle of the day. On some days, it even felt as though there were more people outside in the evening.
From Hauptplatz, you can walk toward the Mur River and continue to Kunsthaus Graz, famous for its futuristic architecture. The combination of the historic Old Town, the modern architecture of Kunsthaus Graz, and the sky beginning to turn orange creates a beautiful atmosphere that can only really be experienced at this time of day.
Schlossberg at 8 PM
When visiting Graz, Schlossberg is one place you should not miss.
Even at around 8 PM, the viewing areas are still filled with tourists and locals. Some people sit on benches and admire the view, while others simply enjoy the cooler evening air.
Unlike during the daytime, the city gradually takes on warm sunset colors as the evening progresses. The red rooftops of the Old Town are surrounded by soft evening light, creating a peaceful atmosphere.
The view around the Uhrturm offers a completely different atmosphere from what you see during the day.
Winter in Graz can be too cold for spending a long time outdoors, but around the summer solstice, the temperatures are often comfortable enough for an evening walk. It is the perfect time to explore the city after dinner.
