Introduction: Two Must-See Attractions in Bratislava
In my previous articles, I covered Bratislava’s public transportation and Devín Castle. This time, I visited two of the most iconic landmarks in the Slovak capital: Bratislava Castle, perched on a hill overlooking the city, and St. Martin’s Cathedral, one of the symbols of Bratislava’s Old Town.
I walked around both major attractions and also discovered a useful shortcut for reaching Bratislava Castle. If you’re planning a Bratislava sightseeing trip, this route can save you quite a bit of walking.

St. Martin’s Cathedral
St. Martin’s Cathedral is located on the western edge of Bratislava’s Old Town.
From Hviezdoslavovo námestie, walk west from the area around the Opera House. Once you reach the highway, you will see the cathedral on your right. Its huge spire makes it easy to recognize.

History and Highlights of the Cathedral
- A Gothic cathedral dating back to the 13th century
- The coronation church of Hungarian kings from 1563 to 1830
- A replica of the golden crown symbolizing the coronations sits on top of the tower
The interior has the solemn atmosphere typical of a Gothic cathedral, with its high ceilings and beautiful stained-glass windows.
Rather than being filled with flashy decorations, the cathedral has a calm and imposing atmosphere. Knowing that important coronation ceremonies once took place here gives the quiet interior an even greater sense of historical significance.

A Shortcut to Bratislava Castle
The usual route to Bratislava Castle takes you along the main roads:
- Walk underneath the highway
- Walk around the southern side of the castle complex
- Enter through the western gate, the main entrance
However, this route is quite a detour and involves more walking than you might expect.
There Is Actually a Much Shorter Route
On the northern side of the small road next to St. Martin’s Cathedral, on the highway side, there is a construction area with a small gate.
- Go through the small gate.
- Continue ahead until you reach a small entrance gate in the old stone fortifications.
- After passing through, cross the bridge over the highway.
- Climb the stairs on the other side of the bridge.
- You will arrive in the area below the castle.
- Then climb the narrow staircase directly in front of you.

Eventually, you will come across a rather mysterious female statue.

This statue is known as “Bosorka.” Continue climbing from there and you will soon reach the castle.
This route is considerably shorter than the standard route and can save you a lot of energy, especially if you plan to explore the castle afterward.
Bratislava Castle
Bratislava Castle has a distinctive appearance that is often compared to an “upside-down table.”

The large white rectangular building has four towers at its corners, making it instantly recognizable even from a distance.

An Interesting Defensive Design
Behind the main entrance is a large white wall with no windows.
This was part of the castle’s defensive design. The lack of windows made it difficult for enemies to see into the castle and helped improve its defensive capabilities.
Combined with its position on top of a hill, the castle has a distinctly fortress-like atmosphere.

Highlights Inside the Castle
The castle houses exhibitions of the Slovak National Museum.
- The history of Slovakia from prehistoric times to the modern era
- Exhibits from the period of Great Moravia
- Statues of three priests associated with the Great Moravian Basilica
- Historical materials related to royalty and aristocracy
At the time of my visit, there was also a special exhibition dedicated to the French queen Marie Antoinette.
The exhibition focused on:
- The relationship between Marie Antoinette and the Habsburg dynasty
- Court culture
- Replicas of clothing and accessories from the period
- Historical materials related to the French Revolution
It is particularly interesting for anyone interested in European royal history.
Panoramic Views from Bratislava Castle
From the castle terrace, you can see:
- The Danube River
- The red rooftops of Bratislava’s Old Town
- The high-rise buildings of the Eurovea district
The view stretches across much of Bratislava and makes the castle one of the city’s best viewpoints.

It is one of the best places to enjoy a panoramic view of Bratislava.
Where to Find the Restrooms
The restrooms inside the castle are located through the door on the right after walking farther into the square next to Castle Cafe.

- Fee: €0.50
- It is useful to carry some cash, although card payment is also available.
Because Bratislava Castle is located on a hill, it is worth knowing where the restroom is before you start exploring.
Conclusion
For a classic Bratislava sightseeing route, I recommend the following:
- Explore Bratislava’s Old Town
- Visit St. Martin’s Cathedral
- Take the shortcut to Bratislava Castle
This route gives you a great introduction to the city in a relatively compact area.
Bratislava is a city where history, religion, and its heritage as a fortified city all come together in a surprisingly compact space.
You can see the main highlights in half a day, but taking your time will reveal much more of the city’s character and history. Bratislava is also an excellent destination for a day trip from Vienna.
