Palatinus Strand Baths Budapest: A Family-Friendly Thermal Spa with Kids

旅行

When you think of Budapest, one of the first things that comes to mind is its famous thermal baths. However, traveling with children comes with one major challenge.
Many of Hungary’s thermal water pools do not allow children under the age of 14, which significantly limits the number of thermal bath facilities that families with young children can enjoy.

One of the best options for families is Palatinus Strand Baths, which combines heated swimming pools with several thermal-water pools.
It is an excellent family-friendly destination where both adults who want to relax in warm thermal water and children who want to play in the pool can enjoy themselves. Here is my experience visiting the facility.

■ Location: A Relaxing Spa on Margaret Island

Palatinus Strand Baths is located in the center of Margaret Island, an island in the Danube River just north of central Budapest.

  • Accessible by a combination of trams and buses from central Budapest
  • Approximately 30 minutes from the city center
  • Close enough to visit during a day of sightseeing

The journey is slightly more complicated than visiting a spa in the city center, but the atmosphere of having a spa on a peaceful island is wonderful. Once you arrive, the noise of the city seems to disappear, making it a great place to relax.

■ Admission Fees: Different Prices for Adults and Children

When I visited, admission was 3,600 HUF for adults and 2,400 HUF for children. There are also family tickets available. For example, a family of four with children could enter for 9,600 HUF.

(Interestingly, public transportation in Hungary also has a relatively limited concept of children’s fares, which can seem a little unusual to tourists.)

■ Lockers and Changing Rooms: Shared Facilities with Changing Cabins

After entering, you will find a large locker room that is shared by men and women.
There are individual changing cabins where you can change into your swimsuit.

At Palatinus, swimsuits are required in all pools. I recommend bringing your own towel and sandals. Sandals are especially important if you plan to use the outdoor facilities in winter. Otherwise, your feet will quickly freeze! If you also want to use the swimming pool, you will need a swimming cap as well.

Things to be aware of:

  • Numbered changing cabins require an additional fee.
  • Be careful not to confuse them with the free changing cabins.
  • Lockers can be opened and closed using a wristband, which is very convenient.

If you are not used to European spas, the system may initially seem a little confusing. Once you get used to it, however, it is quite straightforward.

■ Pool Facilities

🔹 Indoor Pools

・Adult thermal pool (around 36°C)
・Hotter thermal pool (around 39°C)
・Children’s pool (for children aged 10 and under) ← Important!

The thermal pools have a fairly noticeable sulfur smell.

There is a dedicated children’s pool indoors, with pleasantly warm water that is comfortable for children. It is not particularly large, but it is more than sufficient for a family visit.

That left me wondering: what about children between the ages of 10 and 14?

🔹 Outdoor Pools

These outdoor facilities are available even during winter:

  • Outdoor heated spa pool at around 36°C
  • Deep swimming pool suitable for serious swimming

This is quite different from a traditional Japanese hot spring.
Instead, you get to experience the European-style pleasure of soaking in a heated outdoor pool in the middle of winter. It reminded me a little of Japan’s Hawaiian-style water parks.

The outdoor spa pool is relatively shallow, with raised areas and bench-like structures along the sides where you can lie back and relax.
It is the perfect place to spend a few hours simply relaxing in warm water while looking up at the sky.

The swimming pool, on the other hand, is designed for serious swimming.
It is quite deep, and many Japanese women may find that they cannot comfortably touch the bottom.
It is better suited to people who want to exercise.

■ Winter Outdoor Pools: A One-Minute Battle Against the Cold

When you walk from the indoor area to the outdoor pool:

Outside temperature: Probably below freezing
My reaction: “No way, this is impossible…”

But once you endure that freezing minute and finally get into the warm water, it instantly feels like heaven.

This battle against the cold is actually one of the best parts of experiencing Budapest’s heated outdoor pools in winter.

■ My Experience: A Perfect Balance Between European Spa Culture and the Japanese Love of Hot Water

Palatinus is not a place for extremely hot natural hot springs like those found in Kusatsu or Beppu, Japan.
It is primarily a heated swimming pool facility with some thermal-water pools, so you should not expect a traditional Japanese onsen experience.

However, the combination of:

  • Warm thermal water at comfortable temperatures
  • Swimming pools
  • Outdoor heated pools that can be enjoyed even in winter
  • An indoor pool where children can play

makes it a particularly good fit for Japanese travelers.
When traveling abroad, many Japanese people eventually start missing a nice hot bath. Palatinus does a surprisingly good job of satisfying that feeling while still offering a distinctly European spa experience.

I ended up spending several hours simply relaxing in the outdoor spa pool.
By the time I left, I felt as though all the fatigue from the trip had disappeared.

■ Conclusion: A Top Choice for Families Visiting Budapest

To sum up, Palatinus offers:

✔ An indoor pool where children can swim

✔ Warm spa pools where adults can relax

✔ Outdoor heated pools that can be enjoyed even in winter

✔ A rare facility where the whole family can have fun together

It may be different from Budapest’s traditional thermal baths, but its combination of being family-friendly, child-friendly, and comfortable even in winter makes it an excellent choice.
