Graz Christmas Markets at Night: Christmas Lights & Old Town Guide

イベント

After exploring Graz’s Old Town during the day, I went back out for an evening walk. And to put it simply, Graz is definitely livelier at night during the Christmas season. The streets become much busier, with people everywhere enjoying an evening stroll while holding cups of hot mulled wine.

That said, the atmosphere is not loud or rowdy at all. People are simply enjoying the Christmas season in a relaxed and peaceful way. I think this is one of the things that makes Graz so enjoyable: you can explore the city comfortably even when it is busy.

Here are some of the highlights that particularly caught my attention while exploring Graz’s Old Town at night.

◆ Hauptplatz Christmas Market

Hauptplatz is the main square and one of the busiest spots in Graz’s Old Town.
It is already fairly busy during the day, but the real action begins at night. The area around the Christmas market can become crowded enough that walking through the crowds takes a little effort.

People are constantly enjoying hot mulled wine at the market stalls, while families and tourists can be seen eating Baumkuchen, sausages, and other festive treats. The carousel is especially bright at night, with the sound of children’s laughter adding to the atmosphere.

Another highlight is the view of the Christmas tree and the illuminated Clock Tower on Schlossberg. Seeing these two iconic Graz landmarks together creates a view that feels especially representative of the city during the Christmas season.

◆ Jakominiplatz Mini Clock Tower Illumination

Jakominiplatz is one of Graz’s main public transport hubs, and during the Christmas season it features a mini Clock Tower illuminated with Christmas lights. It is not particularly large, but the cute light design makes it very photogenic.

Jakominiplatz is also a major tram connection point, making it a great place to wait for the occasional illuminated Christmas tram. If you are lucky, this is probably one of the best places to catch a glimpse of the sparkling tram as it passes through the night.

◆ The Children’s Fairground and a Cozy Evening Atmosphere

The small children’s fairground area, which is already lively during the day, takes on a different atmosphere at night. Children enjoy the rides and attractions, while adults relax nearby with a cup of hot mulled wine and watch them. The whole area has a wonderfully laid-back and family-friendly atmosphere.

Another charming feature of the evening scenery is the trolleybus connecting the fairground area with Jakominiplatz. Watching it glide through the illuminated streets adds another small but memorable touch to the winter atmosphere of Graz.

◆ Final Thoughts

Graz is beautiful during the day, but the city becomes even more magical at night during the Christmas season. The streets are brighter, people seem more relaxed and cheerful, and the entire Old Town takes on a festive atmosphere.

It feels safe and comfortable to walk around, while the Christmas lights and decorations provide plenty to see. Simply taking a stroll through Graz’s Old Town is enough to soak up the warm and joyful atmosphere of Christmas.
