Rettenbachklamm Graz Hiking Guide: Trail, Access & Tips

旅行

Introduction

As the weather gets warmer, the hiking season in Austria is finally here.

Austria has countless hiking trails, but this time I would like to review Rettenbachklamm, a hiking trail that is surprisingly easy to access from Graz city center.

When you hear “a hiking trail close to the city,” you might imagine an easy walking path. However, Rettenbachklamm offers much more nature than I expected, along with a little sense of adventure.

Even though you can reach it entirely by public transportation from central Graz, you can enjoy a surprisingly wild natural environment surrounded by forest and a flowing stream.

How to Get to Rettenbachklamm

Accessible from the Mariatrost Side

Rettenbachklamm is located on the eastern side of Graz, close to the city limits.

The entrance to the hiking trail is about a 20-minute walk from the popular Mariatrost Basilica.

Mariatrost can be reached from central Graz by Tram Line 1.

The Other Exit Is Also Served by Tram

At the other end of the hiking trail, you will find the Waldhof / Rettenbachklamm stop, which is also on Tram Line 1.

This means you can hike in the following direction:

  • Start from the Mariatrost side
  • Finish on the Waldhof side

Being able to access both ends of the trail by public transportation is extremely convenient.

Tram Construction Is Currently Ongoing

However, Tram Line 1 is currently undergoing construction.

At the moment, the service operates as follows:

  • The tram runs as far as Hilmteich
  • An E1 replacement bus operates beyond Hilmteich

If you are heading there for sightseeing or hiking, I recommend checking the latest GVB service information in advance.

Surprisingly Close to the City Center

It only takes a few tens of minutes to reach the nearest stop from central Graz.

From the stop, it takes about another 10 minutes on foot to reach the entrance to the hiking trail.

The trail is so close to the city that you may be surprised to find such a natural environment so nearby.

About the Trail

A Relaxing Trail Along a Stream

Rettenbachklamm is basically a trail that follows a small stream.

Walking through the forest while listening to the sound of running water is extremely relaxing and refreshing.

But It Is More Challenging Than Expected

However, if you imagine a gentle walking path like the trails around Hilmteich when you hear “a hike near the city,” you might be surprised.

There are sections of Rettenbachklamm where you need to:

  • Climb over rocks
  • Climb up uneven sections
  • Walk along narrow paths

So while it is not a serious mountain hike, it is definitely more adventurous than a simple city walk.

There Are Also Places Where You Cross the Stream

One of the most distinctive features of the trail is crossing the stream.

In several places, there is no bridge. Instead, you cross by using rocks in the stream as stepping stones.

For that reason, I recommend wearing:

  • Shoes with good grip
  • Shoes that you do not mind getting dirty

Depending on the conditions, your feet may also get a little wet.

Surrounded by Forest and Water

The strongest impression you get throughout the trail is the overwhelming sense of being surrounded by nature.

You spend most of the hike surrounded by:

  • Forest
  • Streams
  • Rocks
  • Shade from the trees

It is surprisingly cool and refreshing, making it a relatively comfortable hike even during summer.

It Really Feels Like a Natural Escape

In Japan, people often describe places like this as having a feeling of “negative ions,” and Rettenbachklamm really has that kind of atmosphere.

You can constantly hear the sound of running water, and the air feels noticeably cool.

Even when it was hot in central Graz, I felt significantly cooler once I reached the trail.

I did not know what it was at first, but I spotted a fire salamander, and another hiker told me, “That’s a fire salamander!”

Apparently, despite its striking colors, it is poisonous to touch.

The Scenery on the Waldhof Side Is Also Beautiful

Near the exit on the Hilmteich side, there is a horse training facility.

There are open grasslands around the area, creating a completely different atmosphere from the forest.

After hiking through the narrow gorge, the scenery suddenly opens up at the end of the trail, which feels fantastic.

What to Wear and Bring

Sneakers Are Recommended

This is not a serious mountain hike, but I would definitely recommend wearing at least regular sneakers.

Sandals and shoes with poor grip can be quite dangerous.

Be Especially Careful After Rain

The rocks and areas along the stream can become slippery, so extra caution is necessary after rain.

Some sections can also become quite muddy.

Bring Water

There are basically no shops or vending facilities along the trail.

Especially during the warmer months, it is a good idea to bring enough water with you.

Highly Recommended for Hiking Near Graz

Rettenbachklamm offers an excellent balance of:

  • Being close to the city
  • Easy access by public transportation
  • A strong sense of nature
  • A moderate sense of adventure

Overall, it is a very well-balanced hiking trail for anyone looking to escape the city without traveling far from Graz.

Conclusion

Rettenbachklamm is a surprisingly natural and scenic hiking trail that is easy to access from Graz city center.

Although it is a relaxing trail that follows a stream, it also includes:

  • Rocky sections
  • Stream crossings
  • Forest trails

so it feels much more like a real hike than I initially expected.

In particular, I really enjoyed:

  • The sound of running water
  • The fresh forest air
  • The cool temperature

It was so refreshing that I was genuinely surprised to discover such a place in Graz.
