If you are not aware of these restrictions in advance, your sightseeing plans can quickly become complicated. Here is what you should know before visiting.

1. Large Luggage Can Be a Major Problem in Venice
You may want to start sightseeing immediately after arriving in Venice.
Or perhaps you want to explore the city for a few hours after checking out of your hotel before heading to the airport.
This can be particularly challenging if you are staying outside Venice’s historic center, such as in Mestre, because you may not be able to leave your luggage at your hotel after checking out.
As a result, you may end up sightseeing with a suitcase or large backpack.
At some attractions, such as the Glass Museum on Murano Island, which is generally less crowded, staff may be able to hold your luggage at the entrance.
However, the situation is different at St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace.
You cannot enter these attractions with large pieces of luggage.
A small backpack may sometimes be accepted or stored in an on-site cloakroom, but a suitcase-sized bag can be stopped at the entrance altogether.
In that case, staff may direct you to an external luggage storage facility.
2. Luggage Storage at St. Mark’s Basilica
At St. Mark’s Basilica (Basilica di San Marco), if your luggage is considered too large, you may be directed to a nearby locker facility.
However, this can be surprisingly expensive, costing around €7 per storage space.
There is another problem: because St. Mark’s Basilica is such a popular attraction, the lockers can sometimes be completely full.
If you arrive at the wrong time, you may end up walking around looking for somewhere to leave your luggage.
Large suitcases may also be too big for the lockers, making this option impractical for travelers with bulky luggage.
In other words:
Waiting until you arrive at St. Mark’s Basilica to figure out what to do with your luggage may be too late.
3. Consider Storing Your Luggage at Venice Santa Lucia Station
If you are using Venezia Santa Lucia railway station, another good option is the luggage storage service inside the station, known as Deposito Bagagli.
The price is €6 for up to five hours, with an additional €1 per hour after that.
If you arrive by train and plan to finish your sightseeing within five hours, leaving your luggage at the station before heading toward St. Mark’s Square can be a convenient solution.
The station luggage service is staffed, so you hand your bags over at a counter rather than simply leaving them in an unattended locker.
However, queues can form during busy periods, so arriving early in the morning is a good idea.
4. Bounce Is Another Convenient Luggage Storage Option
Another option is a private luggage storage service.
One of the better-known services is Bounce.
Bounce partners with hotels, shops, and other businesses around Venice. You can make a reservation through its website or app and leave your luggage at a convenient nearby location.
Prices are generally around €5–€6 per bag, and one of the main advantages is that longer storage periods may not require additional hourly fees.
One thing to keep in mind is that you can only use each partner location during its opening hours.
Many locations do not open until around 10 a.m., so this can be inconvenient if you want to start sightseeing very early.
I actually used Bounce myself, and I recommend setting up your account and payment information in advance.
Trying to register and arrange everything on the day of your visit can be surprisingly stressful, especially if your mobile connection or Wi-Fi is unreliable.
Installing the app and completing the setup before your trip will make the process much smoother.
