Introduction

Vienna is home to many famous cafés, but this time I visited Café Central, one of the city’s most popular and well-known cafés. It is famous among tourists as well as locals, and I think it is one of the places worth visiting if you want to experience Vienna’s traditional café culture.

Location & Access|Easy to Visit While Sightseeing

Café Central is located in the heart of Vienna, so getting there is very convenient.

It is just a few minutes’ walk from Herrengasse Station on the U3 line. It is also close to Vienna’s historic city center, making it easy to combine a visit with sightseeing around the Hofburg Palace.

Because of its central location, I found it very easy to include Café Central as part of a sightseeing route.

This is what the line looked like on a weekend.

Menu|A Huge Selection of Cakes

One of the highlights of Café Central is the huge selection of cakes. Even just looking at the display case is enjoyable. Most cakes cost around €6–7, which I would consider a fairly standard price range for a famous café in Vienna.

Some of the main menu items include:

  • Apfelstrudel: €6.9
  • Mohn Streuselkuchen: €6.5
  • Croissant: €4.2
  • Sachertorte: €6.9
  • Nuss Kuss: €6.9
  • Café Central Torte: €6.9
  • Herbstkuss: €6.9
  • Schokozauber: €6.9
  • Tonka Wonka: €6.9
  • Veganer Beerenmix: €6.9
  • Mont Blanc: €6.9
  • Altenbergtorte: €6.9
  • Zitronentörtchen: €6.9
  • Himbeer Harmony: €6.9
  • Peanuts Caramel: €6.9
  • Trio de Petit Fours: €6.9
  • Sisi’s Favourite: €6.9
  • Johann Strauss Torte: €6.9

The menu includes everything from the classic Sachertorte to original Café Central creations, so choosing just one was surprisingly difficult.

Interior|An Impressive Atmosphere

The first thing I noticed after entering was how impressive the interior is. The ceilings are extremely high, while the arched architecture and warm lighting create an elegant atmosphere that feels full of history.

It has exactly the kind of atmosphere you would expect from a historic Viennese café. In fact, it feels almost more like a small palace than an ordinary café. I think the atmosphere alone makes Café Central worth visiting.

Cake Review|Rich Chocolate Cakes Were the Highlight

This time, I ordered the following three cakes:

  • Sachertorte
  • Schokozauber
  • Altenbergtorte

First, the Sachertorte was a classic Viennese-style Sachertorte. The balance between the rich chocolate flavor and apricot was very good, making it a satisfying and reliable choice. It had exactly the kind of flavor you would expect from a traditional Sachertorte, so I would recommend it to first-time visitors as well.

Schokozauber is a dome-shaped chocolate cake with an impressive appearance and an especially rich flavor. The chocolate taste is packed throughout the cake, making it a great choice for chocolate lovers. Of the three cakes I tried, this was probably the one I enjoyed the most.

Altenbergtorte consists of a cocoa sponge topped with whipped cream and covered with sliced chocolate. Despite its appearance, it has quite a rich flavor. The chocolate and cream work well together, and the cake has a certain lightness despite its sweetness, so I could enjoy it without getting tired of the flavor.

Overall, I was impressed by the quality of the chocolate cakes. Each one had its own character, while all three were very satisfying.

Important|Temporary Location as of March 2026

As of March 2026, Café Central is temporarily operating at a different location because of renovation work at the main café. This temporary arrangement started on March 16, 2026, and is expected to continue for some time.

The temporary location is:
Freyung 3 (inside Palais Harrach)

The opening hours are reportedly 7:30 AM–10:00 PM.

If you are planning to visit, I recommend checking the latest information before going, as the location and opening hours may change.

Conclusion|A Famous Café Worth Visiting for the Atmosphere

Café Central is not simply a place to have cake. It is the kind of café where you can enjoy the entire experience, including the historic interior and atmosphere.

  • Elegant and historic interior
  • A wide variety of cakes
  • Convenient location for sightseeing

For these reasons, I think Café Central is an excellent place to experience traditional Viennese café culture.

The prices are somewhat high, but considering the quality of the cakes and the atmosphere, I think it is worth visiting at least once when you are in Vienna.
