Salzstiegl Ski Resort Guide: Skiing, Sledding & Snow Activities Near Graz, Austria

旅行

Introduction: One of Styria’s Top Ski Resorts

In my previous article, I reviewed Gaberl Ski Resort near Graz. This time, I’m introducing Salzstiegl, a larger ski area and one of the most well-known ski destinations in Styria.

Salzstiegl is accessible as a day trip from Graz, while still offering a good variety of slopes and facilities. It is a versatile ski resort where families, beginners, sledders, and snow hikers can all enjoy themselves.

For more information about my sledding experience, check out this article about sledding in Austria.

Getting There: The Mountain Drive Is Part of the Experience

Salzstiegl is located in the mountainous area west of Graz. It is relatively close to Gaberl, which I introduced previously, but the access roads are different.

Gaberl is located along the main Route 77 and is relatively easy to reach, even by public bus. In contrast, the road to Salzstiegl becomes narrower and more mountainous. Passing larger vehicles can be a little nerve-racking, but the roads are well cleared of snow, so a normal set of winter equipment should be sufficient.

If you are driving via the motorway, exit at Modriach and follow the route alongside Packer Stausee.

Packer Stausee completely frozen over. The photo was taken from inside the car, so the quality is not the best…

In winter, Packer Stausee can freeze over completely, creating a beautiful mountain landscape. On a clear day, the drive offers spectacular Alpine scenery and is an enjoyable part of the journey to Salzstiegl.

Lifts & Ski Slopes

Ski area map

Salzstiegl has the following lifts:

  • Buchenlift
  • Lupolift
  • Speiklifte
  • Muldenlift
  • Zwergenlift
  • Arenalift

Lupolift is a rope tow located near the entrance on the beginner practice slope. It is a good place for people who are just starting to learn how to ski.

Lupolift on the beginner practice slope

The main lift is Speiklifte, which takes you from the entrance area almost all the way to the upper part of the mountain. It is very convenient if you want to maximize the number of runs you can enjoy.

Dedicated sledding course (Rodelbahn)

Overall, Salzstiegl feels more beginner-friendly than Gaberl, with a larger selection of easier slopes. Rather than being aimed primarily at advanced skiers, it is a well-balanced ski resort for beginners, intermediate skiers, and families.

T-bar lift. Personally, I’m not very good at these…

However, the fact that all of the lifts are T-bar or anchor-style lifts may be a matter of personal preference. There are no chairlifts, so visitors who are not used to T-bar lifts may need a little practice.

The operating hours are from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Parking

There are two main parking areas at Salzstiegl.

Main Parking Area (Lower Station)

The main parking area at the bottom of the resort is where you will find the ticket office. If it is your first visit, this is generally the place you should head to first.

Second Parking Area (Near Zwergenlift)

A second parking area is located slightly higher up, near Zwergenlift.

This is also where the starting point of the sledding course introduced in my previous article is located. I also saw many people heading toward the summit for snow hiking from this area. It is particularly convenient if you are traveling with someone who does not ski.

Lift Ticket Prices

Lift ticket price list

The lift ticket prices are as follows:

  • Day pass: €48
  • Afternoon pass: €27
  • 4-hour consecutive pass: €40

Sledding-related prices are as follows:

  • Basic sledding fee (adult): €8
  • Sled rental: €8
  • Sled taxi, one ride: €10

One of the great advantages of this resort is that you can enjoy both skiing and sledding in the same location.

Ski & Equipment Rental: Convenient On-Site Service

Salzstiegl has ski and snowboard rental services right at the resort, making it easy to rent equipment on site. Staff can help with sizing and provide basic assistance, so you do not necessarily need to bring all your equipment with you when traveling. Reservations are not required, but during busy periods, it is recommended to arrive early.

Approximate Rental Prices (2025–26 Season)

The prices below are examples of one-day rental rates listed by the resort.

  • Individual rentals (e.g. skis & boots)
    ・1 day: approximately €37 (skis + boots)

・Skis only: approximately €33 per day

Guesthouse & Facilities

There is a guesthouse at the foot of the resort where visitors can enjoy a buffet-style lunch.

The menu includes:

  • A dish similar to a breaded ham cutlet
  • Fish and chips
  • Other classic Austrian dishes

There is a good variety of options available.

The accommodation also has a bowling alley, billiards room, and seminar rooms, although these facilities were not open on the day I visited. There are also play areas for children, making the resort particularly family-friendly.

In other words, Salzstiegl also has the feel of a small resort where you can enjoy activities and facilities beyond skiing.

Overall Review: A Versatile, Well-Balanced Ski Resort

Salzstiegl offers:

  • A large number of beginner-friendly slopes
  • Sledding and snow hiking opportunities
  • Easy access for a day trip from Graz
  • Family-friendly facilities

These features make Salzstiegl a very well-balanced ski resort.

It is not a huge Alpine resort with an enormous network of slopes, but it has a convenient, local feel and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to enjoy.

If you are staying in Graz and wondering which ski resort to visit, Salzstiegl is definitely worth putting on your list.
