About Vapiano | A Convenient Option for Travelers
Vapiano is an Italian restaurant chain with locations across Europe, including several restaurants in Austria.
There are locations in Vienna as well as in central Graz, making Vapiano a very convenient option when you are traveling and wondering, “Where should I eat?”
The prices are relatively affordable, with many dishes costing around €10. Considering the cost of eating out in Vienna and other Austrian cities, I think this is quite reasonable.
The pizzas are especially large. By Japanese standards, one pizza can feel like almost enough for two people. Sharing one can therefore offer very good value for money.
How to Order | A Self-Service System That May Take Some Getting Used To
The ordering process uses a modern self-service ordering system that can be completed at a terminal.
First, you choose your main dish, such as pasta or pizza, and then select any additional toppings or customizations. You can also adjust things such as the amount of garlic and spiciness, and these customizations are available free of charge.
However, the system strongly encourages you to add toppings and extras, so I felt that it took a little longer than expected to actually complete the order. If you are using it for the first time, you might find yourself thinking, “When is this going to finish?” Haha.
Once you have completed your order, the terminal tells you to scan the QR code on one of the pagers located underneath the terminal. Simply take one of the alarms and scan its QR code at the terminal to complete the order.
When your food is ready, the alarm will go off. You then simply go to the pickup counter in front of the kitchen and collect your food. It may feel a little confusing the first time, but once you have done it once, the system is actually quite simple.
Food Review | Good Value and Satisfying Portions
This time, I ordered the following three dishes:
- Marry Me Chicken (pasta)
- Pomodoro (pasta)
- Crudo (pizza)
All three dishes cost €9.90.
The first dish that really stood out to me was the Marry Me Chicken pasta. The sauce looked rich and well-coated, which immediately made it look appetizing. When I actually tried it, the garlic flavor was strong and gave the dish plenty of punch. It was very satisfying. The balance between the creaminess and garlic worked really well, and unlike some pasta dishes abroad that can taste a little bland, this one had plenty of flavor. Personally, this was my favorite of the three.
Pomodoro is a simple pasta with tomato sauce, but it has the reliable appeal of a classic. The balance between the acidity and sweetness of the tomatoes was good, and the flavor was light enough to enjoy all the way to the end. I think it is a particularly good choice when you are tired or simply do not feel like taking a risk with your meal. It does not have any particularly distinctive feature, but in terms of being a safe choice, it does its job very well.
And then there was the Crudo pizza. The first thing I noticed was simply how big it was. It is quite impressive when it arrives. It is generously topped with prosciutto, which makes it look very satisfying, and the balance between the salty topping and the crust was good. The crust itself is relatively thin and easy to eat, but the overall portion is still very large, so it is quite filling. After eating it myself, I can honestly say that it felt like a portion for two people. Eating the whole thing alone will definitely leave you very full.
Overall, what impressed me most was the value for money. The food may not be at the same level as a high-end Italian restaurant, but it is definitely tasty enough. More importantly, the portions are generous, so you leave feeling satisfied. For a meal while sightseeing, I thought Vapiano offered a very good balance of price, taste, and portion size.

When you are looking for somewhere to eat in Austria and want to:
- Keep the cost as low as possible
- Eat something that is easy for Japanese travelers to enjoy
- Avoid taking a chance on an unfamiliar restaurant
Vapiano is a restaurant that checks all three boxes.
There are locations in convenient areas for tourists, the prices are relatively affordable, and the portions are generous. It is an easygoing restaurant where you can have a filling meal without spending too much.
It is also a great “escape option” when you have started to get a little tired of Austrian food during your trip.
