In Austria, apricots, known as Marille in Austrian German, come into season around May.
During this time of year, supermarkets are filled not only with fresh apricots, but also with a wide variety of apricot products, including:

In particular, the Wachau region west of Vienna is famous for its apricots. Wachauer Marille, or Wachau apricots, is a well-known regional specialty.
This time, I decided to try an apricot liqueur that I found at a supermarket in Austria.

Apricot Liqueur in Austria
Austria is well known for wine and beer, but fruit-based liqueurs and spirits are also popular.
Apricots are particularly popular in Austria, so you can find a wide selection of apricot liqueurs in the liquor sections of supermarkets.
Many products are made with apricots from the Wachau region, and they can also make interesting souvenirs from Austria.
WIESER MARILLEN LIKÖR
The one I bought was WIESER MARILLEN LIKÖR.
The price was €11.99 for a 350 ml bottle.
I would say this is a relatively affordable price for a liqueur.
It has an alcohol content of 20% ABV.
It is stronger than wine, but not as strong as most spirits, making it fairly easy to drink.
The bottle also has an elegant design, making it look like a nice option for a small gift.
How Does It Taste?
I first tried it on the rocks.
As soon as I poured it into the glass, a sweet apricot aroma filled the air.
My first impression after taking a sip was:
“It tastes like concentrated apricot.”
The natural sweetness of the fruit comes through clearly, while the alcohol itself is relatively smooth and mild.
If you enjoy sweet alcoholic drinks, I think you will really like this one.
It is the kind of liqueur that you can almost enjoy like a dessert.
It Is Also Great with Sparkling Water
Next, I tried mixing it with sparkling water.
This was also really delicious.
The apricot aroma became fresher and lighter, while the alcohol was even less noticeable.
If you find it a little too sweet when drinking it on the rocks, mixing it with sparkling water makes it much easier to drink.
I imagine this refreshing version would be especially popular during the warmer months.
Personally, I found that:
- On the rocks is great for slowly enjoying the flavor
- With sparkling water, it pairs better with a meal
So I would choose the serving style depending on the occasion.
Add Fresh Apricots for an Extra Special Touch
If fresh apricots are in season, I also recommend adding a piece of fresh apricot to your glass.
It instantly makes the drink look more colorful and gives it the appearance of a cocktail you might get at a small bar.
Fresh apricots go particularly well with the sparkling-water version.
Even though you are simply enjoying a drink at home, it gives you a slightly more luxurious feeling.
The Wachau Region and Austria’s Apricot Culture
When it comes to apricots in Austria, the Wachau region is probably the first place that comes to mind.
This beautiful region along the Danube River is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is famous for destinations such as:
- Melk Abbey
- Dürnstein
- Krems
Apricot cultivation is particularly important in this region, and during the season you will find apricot products being sold all over the area.
If you are visiting the region, it could be fun to look for local apricot products alongside a Danube cruise or a visit to Melk Abbey.
